Sony’s Afeela electric vehicle will offer digital license plates

Sony’s upcoming electric vehicle is going to allow a degree of license plate customization that was never thought possible before.

According to TechRadar, Sony’s Afeela EV (which has been shown at several CES events in past years but is still not on sale) will offer something new: digital license plates. Sony is partnering with a company called Reviver to include its Rplate technology, which allows you to customize what’s on your license plate with a smartphone app.

For vanity plate fans, life may never be the same.

According to TechRadar, it’s a simple HD display that allows you to switch between black and white backgrounds, with the added ability to write custom messages on the bottom of the plate, possibly retaining your given license plate number above them. Examples of possible messages include social media handles or catchphrases, though as TechRadar points out, it’s not yet clear whether profanity will be allowed.

Many US states also have different laws that govern how license plates must appear on vehicles, and such technology must comply with many state laws and regulations.

Answers to these and other questions about the Afila will have to wait until the car is launched. Despite debuting at CES in 2023, it still hasn’t come out, and it’s rumored to cost around $90,000 for US drivers. That’s a lot of money to spend for goofy license plate capabilities.
