Sony appears to be testing dynamic pricing on PlayStation games

a site called pprices was tracking prices on Sony’s digital game store and noticed something unusual: some games were being offered at different prices to different users. Additionally, those offers are tracked in the PlayStation API with usage identifiers such as IPT_PILOT and IPT_OPR_TESTING.

Dynamic pricing is nothing new and is used in many industries. But it often faces backlash and is usually not found in online game stores. according to ppricesSony is running A/B tests on the prices of more than 150 games in 68 regions, though the US doesn’t appear to be part of the experiment at the moment. Right now, at least, Sony is not thinking of increasing prices. Instead, the program appears to offer select users discounts ranging from 5 percent to 17.5 percent on titles like spider man 2, god of warAnd red dead redemption 2.

Still, even if Sony’s version of dynamic pricing is focused on reducing costs for some users, it’s likely to draw anger. Customers are getting 10 percent discount Sid Meier’s Civilization VII They probably won’t be thrilled when they learn that their next-door neighbor has been offered a 25 percent discount.

We contacted Sony for comment, but have not yet received a response.
