Social Security data downloaded by DOGE employee, whistleblower says

Elon Musk’s Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE) was officially disbanded in November 2025. But we are just beginning to learn the extent of the damage done by this extravagant IT department, which experts warn still exists in all but name.

In this case: A whistleblower report filed with the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration, first revealed on Wednesday Washington Post. This anonymous whistleblower alleges that an unnamed ex-DOGE employee took a thumb drive of millions of Americans’ sensitive Social Security data to his next employer — while boasting to former colleagues that he still had “god-level access” to highly sensitive agency data.

The whistleblower’s claims are being investigated by the agency’s Office of Inspector General, according to a letter sent to congressional oversight committees and obtained by multiple outlets. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden noted that, if true, the allegations would be “one of the largest known data breaches in American history.” Independent“The apparent purpose of weaponizing Americans’ sensitive personal data for political gain.”

The whistleblower report claims that the DOGE employee also told a former co-worker that he expected to receive a presidential pardon if his actions were deemed illegal.

This is not the first DOGE-related social security scam under investigation. Another whistleblower at the agency claimed last August that DOGE “created a live copy of the country’s social security information in a cloud environment that prevents monitoring.”

According to a six-month-long investigation by a congressional committee, DOGE’s data management has put US citizens at high risk. That report cited an internal Social Security Administration risk assessment that suggested the potential for “catastrophic adverse effects”—which could require every American with a Social Security number to get a new one.

The Social Security Administration has experienced data breaches before with DOGE; We’ve explained what you can do if you’re concerned that your number has been exposed. However, this latest whistleblower complaint appears to take the potential for such risks to a whole new level.
