the entire main cast of shrink goes on a big trip in Season 3, with most of the main players ending the season at the beginning of a new life chapter: Alice (Lucita Maxwell) is going to college, Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley) are moving to Spain, Gabi (Jessica Williams) is engaged to another Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.), Brian (Michael Urie) is moving to Tennessee, Sean (Luke Tenney) is moving out. and Paul (Harrison Ford) has moved across the country to be near his daughter.
In other words, everyone is embarking on an exciting new adventure – except Jimmy (Jason Segel), who suddenly finds himself facing a great deal of loneliness without his friends and family. To make things worse, it appears he has ruined his chances with Sophie (Cobie Smulders), and his relationship with Paul has deteriorated after their argument at the end of episode 10.
What happens between Jimmy and Paul?
Jimmy and Paul begin the episode barely speaking to each other. They share some tense conversations on the phone, but it is not until Paul is rebuked by his daughter and Alice that he finally decides to stage a Jimmy-style intervention.

He calls Jimmy and invites him to breakfast, but then instead of sitting down with him he pulls his colleague aside for some real conversation. We’ve copied their exchange, which feels like a key moment that the show has been building to all season, below:
Paul: “Let me do the talking. Okay? Life has thrown you a curveball. So try to control the things you imagine and how you want them to be in your mind. It doesn’t work. If you can’t let this shit go on your own then I’m going to have to… I’m going to have to keep trying to take it away from you. You hear what I’m saying?”
Jimmy: “Yeah, I do, but can we talk about this over waffles?”
P: “No, you are not eating with me. You are eating with him…” [Paul points to Sofi, who’s sitting at a table by herself.] How did you picture it, huh?”
J: “You made me jimmy!”
P: “That’s right, I’m fucking Jimmy! Look baby, if you ever want to move on, you’re going to have to let go of the past. And I know it’s scary. But you… you’ll never forget Tia. Hey, you’ll never forget me. No one will. Letting go of the past means you won’t let your wounds hold you back anymore.”
J: “I’m among them, Paul.”
P: “Well. What a shame that at 42 we’re still not completely covered in scars. These are testament to a life lived to the fullest.”
J: “I don’t want this. I don’t want you to have to fly across the country to make sure I’m okay. I don’t want to be a burden on you.”
P: “You’re not. You’re more than a son to me. I don’t know why I’ve never said this before. I think you’re strong. I think you don’t need me. But as long as I’m around, if you think you need me, I’ll be there for you. Because I love you. Okay?”
J: “Ok.”
P: “Now you have a choice. Either stay stuck, or you can create some new wounds.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Jimmy does exactly what we all want him to: He walks into the restaurant, sits across from Sophie, and starts talking.
Will Jimmy finally be able to move on?
shrink has been renewed for a fourth season, which means it won’t be much longer before we find out how Jimmy and Sophie’s breakfast goes.

But Season 3 ended with temporary hope for all the characters, we know shrink It’s never plain sailing. The new season is going to bring new challenges for all the characters, and we can’t imagine Jimmy’s foray into dating will be any exception.
The main issue we can see? With all his close friends and Alice gone, it feels like a lot of pressure may be put on Jimmy’s budding relationship with Sophie. And with Paul across the country, despite what he says about being there for Jimmy, the distance may still prove to be a strain on their friendship.
