Shania Twain stands up for others in country music.
mega star of style used her acceptance speech for the Equal Play Award at Sunday’s CMT Awards to call for more equality and diversity in the country music industry.
“When I wrote the phrase ‘Man I feel like a woman,’ I honestly had no idea at the time that it would become the underlying theme of a decade-long career,” she said, referring to one of her biggest hits. “It’s amazing how one statement can empower so many people.”
The phrase, Twain said, “has been adopted by many illustrious communities throughout the world and has become a real path of strength… which gives me great pleasure.”
Twain said, “I believe in all-inclusive country music. We’re a family.” “It’s a genre of music with a rich history that has developed and nurtured my songwriting and performing and recording career since childhood. Currently, the industry standard does a real disservice to it.”
Twain, who was presented the award by rapper Megan Thee Stallion, highlighted some of her diverse acts on her “Queen of Me” tour this year, including Lily Rose, Lindsey Ell, Hailey Whitters, Mickey Guyton and others.
Twain said, “I will continue to do my best as a leading player.” “Let’s come together to ensure that all of our fellow actors receive equal roles, regardless of gender, age or race.”
She also performed acapella with the African American singing group, The Boykinz, while presenting an award on stage. Twain connected with the group, which are sisters and rising country stars, after Kelly Clarkson recently surprised Twain by bringing her out to meet her during an episode of Clarkson’s daytime talk show.
