SEC Baseball Power Rankings: Upset-filled weekend leads to massive shift after Week 7

It was an exciting weekend of college baseball inside the SEC. After upsets, surprising wins and more, we’ve shaken up our SEC baseball power rankings after Week 7 action.

Eleven of the league’s 16 teams lost at least one game this week. The weekend was headlined by sweeps, including Florida defeating Arkansas, Texas defeating Oklahoma, Alabama defeating Auburn, Mississippi State defeating Ole Miss, Vanderbilt defeating Tennessee, Texas A&M defeating Missouri and Georgia defeating South Carolina.

In On3’s latest field of 64 launches Released Monday, the SEC had 12 teams in the NCAA Tournament field and six hosting a regional. As we enter the fourth weekend of SEC play, Mississippi State, Texas and Georgia sit atop the conference standings with 7-2 league records. All but Missouri and South Carolina have at least three SEC wins.

Here’s a complete look at our SEC baseball power rankings from 1-16 after Week 7 of the regular season. There are a lot of changes from top to bottom.

Records and rankings as of Tuesday morning

After a 9-7 midweek loss at Houston on Tuesday, Texas got back on track over the weekend. It hosted rival No. 8 Oklahoma and won. The Longhorns dominated Thursday’s opener, winning 14-0. The series tightened up after that, but Texas won 4–3 on Friday and 5–4 on Saturday, both in 10 innings, finishing off the sweep. Next up is a road trip to South Carolina.

Last week was an emphatic statement for Mississippi State. It first beat No. 11 Southern Miss 12-0 on Tuesday and then defeated rival No. 18 Ole Miss. The Bulldogs won 5-4, 6-1 and 7-1 from Friday through Sunday, improving to 24-4 overall and 7-2 in league play. Mississippi State is now ranked No. 2 in this week’s SEC Baseball Power Rankings and hosts No. 5 Georgia in another big SEC series this weekend.

Georgia had a rough start to the week with a 10-7 loss against Kennesaw State on Tuesday. It then hosted South Carolina over the weekend and got back to its winning ways. The Bulldogs won 5-2 on Friday, 3-1 on Saturday and 9-7 on Sunday to improve to 7-2 in league play. Next up is a big test on the road at No. 4 Mississippi State.

Upcoming weeks: at Jacksonville State (Tuesday), at No. 11 Oklahoma (Thursday-Saturday)

Alabama is one of the biggest gainers in this week’s SEC baseball power rankings. The Crimson Tide are coming off a 4-0 week, starting with a win against Austin Peay on Tuesday and ending with an emphatic series sweep against No. 5 Auburn. Alabama won 11–1 on Friday, and then 3–2 and 3–1 on Saturday to move to 6–3 in league play. The Tide will be on the road this weekend at No. 11 Oklahoma.

Florida got back on track this week, starting with a 5-0 shutout win against No. 10 Florida State on Tuesday. The Gators then traveled to No. 4 Arkansas over the weekend, and cruised their way to a 6–3 record in SEC play. They completed an unblemished week by winning 9-4 on Friday, 7-4 on Saturday and 7-6 on Sunday. Like Alabama, Florida also moved up five spots and is in the top five.

Upcoming weeks: vs. Sam Houston (Tuesday), vs. Vanderbilt (Thursday-Saturday)

Texas A&M leads the way in our SEC baseball power rankings, rising six spots. The Aggies beat Houston Christian 5-1 to start the week last Tuesday and then go to Missouri to take care of business over the weekend. They made big gains this week by winning 11-9 on Friday, 14-6 on Saturday and 14-3 on Sunday.

Upcoming weeks: at Missouri State (Tuesday), at No. 18 Auburn (Thursday-Saturday)

Arkansas is down five spots this week. After a 15-2 win against Central Arkansas on Tuesday, the Razorbacks hosted Florida but failed to pick up a win. They lost 9-4 on Friday, 7-4 on Saturday and 7-6 on Sunday, resulting in a massive drop in the rankings. Next up is an important series against Auburn, another team that has been playing great.

Upcoming week: No. 3 Georgia Tech (Tuesday), vs. No. 17 Arkansas (Thursday-Saturday)

After a 10–0 win against South Alabama last Tuesday, Auburn was on the road against rival Alabama and struggled. The Tigers lost 11–1 on Friday, but lost close games 3–2 on Saturday and 3–1 on Sunday to take the series. Down four spots this week, Auburn looks to get back on track against No. 17 Arkansas. The loser would drop out of the top half of the SEC.

Oklahoma has dropped to fifth place after last week’s loss to Texas. Kentucky also fell out of the top eight of our SEC baseball power rankings after dropping its series at LSU, though the Wildcats remain above the Tigers due to their overall offense.

Vanderbilt and LSU are on the rise. The Commodores defeated rival Tennessee in three one-run games and moved up to No. 11 after a poor start. Tennessee, meanwhile, dropped all the way to No. 14. Ole Miss is this week’s biggest drop, dropping six spots after an 0-4 week.
