When the San Jose Earthquakes held open tryouts for their MLS Next Pro second team, The Town FC, soccer players packed the Salinas Regional Soccer Complex in hopes of landing a spot that could lead them to the main Earthquakes team. The day was very tense, with two 50-minute matches played under great pressure and serious talent. Quakes legend Shea Salinas was overseeing the tryouts and studying every detail. "I go to a lot of schools and ask the kids, 'Who here wants to be a professional football player?' And 90% of them raise their hands. So it's really important to give those kids a pathway, an opportunity," Salinas said. "Well, it's those little times when you play, you know, here and there, and someone picks you up and they say 'Wow, you have talent and then you question yourself and you say 'Wow, do I really do this?' And it's like 'Maybe I should try this thing,'" Salinas said. The outstanding athletes from today's trials will be invited to an invite-only combine run by The Town FC in December.
