McAdams’ moment comes in her latest film, send help, Which is in theaters on January 30. And so, to commemorate the occasion, we decided to rank Raimi’s films. Almost all of them are here, one of them we never saw is his direction crimewaveand his Kevin Costner baseball film, for the love of the gameWhich is not style. Where did all the rest fall? Let’s find out.
14. oz The Great and Powerful (2013)
oz The Great and Powerful It’s not a terrible movie, but not a good one either. It is similar to the original story of the Wizard of Oz with James Franco as the Wizard, and while the film made money, it was so generally dismissed that Raimi did not direct another feature for nearly 10 years after its release. No shining moments.
13. spider man 3 (2007)
after the talent that was spider man 2, Anticipations couldn’t be higher for what will be Sam Raimi’s final film spider man Movies. Unfortunately, the movie never comes together, there are too many awkward moments, too many new villains, and not enough of the emotion that made the previous two movies work so well.
12. the quick and the Dead (1995)
This isn’t a movie we’d cover on io9, but because it’s Raimi, we’ll consider it. It is a western about a woman, played by Sharon Stone, who enters a dueling competition in hopes of getting revenge on an evil sheriff, played by Gene Hackman. The cast is incredible (Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio are also along for the ride), but it mostly plays like a Midwestern. There just isn’t enough Ramy for a Ramy list.
11. Gift (2000)
when i first saw Gift, I remember, I was really enjoying it. Nice premise, great cast, Sam Raimi at the helm – what’s not to like? However, unlike many other Raimi films, this has never been one that I’ve had a desire to watch again. Maybe if I did that, it would move up the list, but as it stands, I’ve kept it here. With full disclosure that I could be extremely wrong.
10. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
For his first entry into the official Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam Raimi takes Doctor Strange in a whole new, tragic direction. It’s got everything you love about Raimi movies, but because it’s beholden to the rules and ratings of the MCU, even when it’s working, it’s never too new or shocking to us like the best Raimi movies. A solid effort that’s really fun, but far from one of his best.
9. black person (1990)
do not hate me. I think many people reading this article will consider black person Will be one of Raimi’s best films. And, in terms of sheer scope and innovation, it can. Liam Neeson plays the superhero created by Raimi, who for some reason, never connected with me. The film continues; It’s gorgeous, but like most of Raimi’s other films it never comes together. I’m sure many people will disagree.
8. send help (2026)
Yes, the new Raimi ranks that high on the list. It’s a true return to form for Raimi, who brings his signature brand of horror comedy to the story of a CEO (Dylan O’Brien) and his employee (Rachel McAdams) who are stranded together on an island. It’s a simple premise that goes to wild, disgusting places, and we loved every second of it. But Raimi has made so many classics over the years that this one just happens to fall in the middle of the pack.
7. drag me to Hell (2009)
Blame marketing for this ranking. When? drag me to Hell After coming out, the trailers showed a shot of the main character, played by Alison Lohman, being dragged into hell. Which made sense. This is the title of the film. But over the course of the wonderful, creepy, surprising film, we are led to believe that the character defeats this evil curse. Did the trailer lie? No, instead, it featured the final, biggest reveal of the entire movie. And knowing that it was just coming drag me to Hell Work a little less well than everything above it.
6. a simple plan (1998)
a simple plan Works because it’s so simple. A group of friends inherit a lot of money and aren’t sure if they can trust each other. It features incredible performances across the board, including an Oscar-nomination from Billy Bob Thornton and plenty of tension and twists. I’ve ranked it here only because, as excellent as it is, it’s a mostly straightforward film compared to some other Raimi classics.
5. Army of Darkness (1992)
Out of every movie on this list, my favorite is probably Army of Darkness The most. It’s so fun, so over the top, and so aware of what it’s doing. To me, this is a quintessential film from Raimi and Bruce Campbell, with each actor at the peak of their powers. But, when ranked against Raimi’s other works, the fact that it is much more comedy-forward, rather than having the typical balance, lets it down a bit at times. But still we like it a lot.
4. spider man (2002)
Unless you were there in 2002, it’s hard to put into words what it was like to see Sam Raimi bring Spider-Man to life. Oh sure. People like Tim Burton and Bryan Singer had made smash hit superhero movies before, but spider man Leveled up the entire genre with its adventurous tone and smart exploration of the duality within Peter Parker. The film also helped establish Raimi in a new directorial stratosphere.
3. the evil Dead (1981)
The film that put Raimi on the map remains one of his best films. Everything in the evil Dead Vibrates with enthusiasm. The passion of a group of young filmmakers to create something small and wonderful, blending humor and horror in new and exciting ways. Bruce Campbell is a revelation as always, and the scares go much further than in later iterations.
2. spider man 2 (2004)
The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, And terminator 2-Here’s a short, exclusive list of sequels we think are better than their predecessors spider man 2 Should be on that list. With Raimi’s Peter Parker now fully invested in becoming Spider-Man, the entire film becomes something incredibly special. Doc Ock helps as the villain, and there are some major emotional beats as well. Overall, this is easily one of the best superhero movies of all time.
1. evil dead ii (1987)
There’s just something about Raimi and Part Two. It’s almost as if he has to figure out all the ways the first one could make the next one even better. this happened with spider man, And it happened here, with Evil Dead II. What’s wild about? evil dead ii Is it ridiculously similar to the original, but it just amps up the goofiness and gore a bit for an alchemy that’s even better than the first excellent. A true modern masterpiece of mayhem.
