OpenAI’s ‘Vibes’-based AI device
Over the weekend, Altman spoke more Lauren Powell about OpenAI’s AI device in an interview with Jobs at Emerson Collective’s 9th annual Demo Day in San Francisco. Although Altman didn’t reveal too much about the device in terms of specifications, he did talk about the “vibe” that OpenAI is going for with the product.
“I think the iPhone is the greatest achievement in consumer products ever. It’s an amazing thing,” Altman told Steve Jobs’ widow before beginning her critique of the iPhone. “But one of the things that has gone wrong is that when I use current devices or most apps, I feel like I’m walking through Times Square in New York and am constantly dealing with all the little irritants along the way: lights flashing in my face, stress here, people bumping into me.”
Altman pointed out that flashing notifications from all the different apps and social media platforms is an “unstable thing.” OpenAI is going for a very different vibe with its AI devices.

According to Altman, the ChatGPIT creator aims to bring the atmosphere of “sitting in the most beautiful cabin by the lake or in the mountains, enjoying the peace and quiet” in its AI device.
“I think that’s not really possible in a pre-AI world of technology,” Altman said. “I think it’s not possible with the current type of equipment we have.”
Altman describes a device that makes users’ lives “peaceful and quiet and lets us focus on other things.” Altman envisions a device with “really smart AI that you trust to do work for you over the long term” and which will be “contextually aware of when it should… present information to you or ask for your input.”
“You build trust on it over time,” Altman said. “And it has incredible contextual awareness of your whole life.”
Ivey, who was also being interviewed along with Altman, also revealed that he believed the product would come out in less than two years.
“I hope when people see it, they’ll say ‘That’s it?’ It’s very simple,” Altman said. “But then it just happens. As we were talking about, AI can do a lot.”
OpenAI’s AI device looks very similar to the AI devices that came before it. It looks like we’ll soon be able to see if OpenAI is actually the first country to implement it.
