Ryan Coogler Is Shifting ‘Animorphs’ Into a Disney+ Show

This is for ’90s kids: Kay Applegate animorphs The books will finally be getting a new TV show, courtesy of Disney+.

In the executive producer’s chair is Ryan Coogler through his Proximity Media banner. Per Variety, the show is in early development Testament Writer Brian Wolcott is set to write and executive produce. Following Nickelodeon’s two-season adaptation, Hollywood again set its sights on adapting it as a feature film in 2020. Those plans were eventually put on hold, paving the way for this new show. Neither Applegate or co-creator (and husband) Michael Grant were involved with that film or Nick’s show, and it’s unclear whether they’ll be involved here.

First released in 1996, animorphs Focuses on five teenagers who have the ability to transform into any animal they touch. They use their powers to stop a race of parasitic mind-controlling aliens called the Yeerks from taking over the Earth. Applegate and Grant told this story over the course of 54 books until the series ended in 2001, and it was known for being very cool, very strange and dark, and having great cover art showing the transformation process. Scholastic is adapting the books for graphic novels with the sixth book, Capture, was released last year.
