- The number of casualties in a Russian attack on Kiev, Ukraine, rose to one person killed and 18 injured on Sunday, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnik.
- In southern Kherson, more Russian attacks killed at least two people and wounded seven others, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram.
- At least two people were killed and five wounded in Russian attacks on Saturday in the Donetsk region, according to Governor Vadim Fylyashkin.
- In Russia, a Ukrainian drone strike killed two people in the Belgorod region, the region’s operational headquarters said in a post on Telegram.
- According to Russia’s state TASS news agency, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed that the Russian military shot down 309 drones in the Donbass region using the “Donbass Dome electronic warfare system” over the past week.
peace talks
- Officials from the United States and Ukraine hailed “productive” talks on a deal to end Russia’s war on Ukraine after a meeting in the US state of Florida on Sunday.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism, while also saying that negotiations remain difficult. “We remain realistic about how difficult this is, but also optimistic, especially given the fact that we have made progress,” he said.
- Rubio said talks would continue over the weekend, when U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff travels to Russia. “There are a lot of moving parts, and obviously, there’s another party involved here (Russia) that has to be part of the equation, and that will continue this weekend when Mr. Witkoff travels to Moscow,” he said.
- Ukraine’s new chief negotiator, National Security Council Secretary Rustam Umerov, said Washington has been “super supportive” during the discussions. He said, “America is listening to us, America is supporting us, America is walking with us.”
- Ukraine’s First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Kislitsya, who was attending, also praised the US, saying “this is a good start to the ongoing meeting” and that Rubio showed “great leadership”.
Diplomacy
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he thanked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a call on Sunday. “Ursula is paying close attention to the need to strengthen our resilience amid Russia’s continued attacks on our infrastructure and energy sector,” he said on X.
- German Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin needed to be prepared for changing alliances because “we do not know which alliances we can still count on in the future and how long they will last”.
- In remarks to the German parliament he said: “The geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly – its patterns, its arrangements. Alliances are changing faster than before.”
- Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed Turkey’s support for peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Sunday, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.

- Ukrainian Defense Minister Denis Shmihal announced in a post on X that Ukraine and Norway will jointly produce Ukrainian drones, having signed an agreement with his Norwegian counterpart Tore O Sandvik.

- Lithuania’s Vilnius Airport said on Sunday it had temporarily halted operations due to suspicious balloons in its airspace, the latest in a series of flight disruptions across Europe, some of which have been linked to Russian drone activity.
- Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keseli expressed concern on Friday about attacks on two ships in the Black Sea that were reportedly carried out by Ukrainian forces targeting Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers.
- “These incidents, which occurred within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, pose a serious threat to the safety of navigation, life, property and the environment in the area,” Keseli said in a statement on Saturday.
