Roomba buying guide 2025: Are Roombas the best robot vacuums?

Note: I have not yet personally tested the Roomba Max 705 Combo.

The Max 705 Combo will be the best Roomba for calls in homes where pet mess on the floor is common. In my testing, iRobot’s PrecisionVision small obstruction removers are some of the most reliable on the market, especially around nasty pet waste that should be avoided. For pet messes (or other spills) that need to be cleaned up, the Max 705 Combo uses hot scrubbing with auto-dispensed detergent for iRobot’s cleanest clean.

iRobot also revived the stylish wood accents we first saw on the 2023 Roomba Combo j9+. Anyone with a strict decorating style will have a hard time rejecting this advanced look, compared to the cheap-y plastic construction of most self-emptying docks.

As the most powerful Roomba yet, the Max 705 Combo is kind of a shoo-in for best Roomba for pet hair. I’m also stoked at the return of the counter-spinning parallel brush roll at the bottom, which iRobot omitted on some other recent high-end Roombas. From past experience, this dual system is incredibly effective at digging into carpet fibers and removing pet hair and long human hair (without the larger hairs getting wrapped around the rollers).

However, the Roomba Max 705 Combo’s 13,000 Pa suction power is only impressive compared to other Roombas – not to mention flagship robot vacuums from other brands. It’s significantly less powerful than the 20,000+ PA suction power of the Roborock Saros 10 and 10R, which I loved in the early 2025, and it’s completely left in the dust by the 30,000+ PA suction power of the powerful Dream Aqua10 Roller Ultra, which recently aced my hair clump tests at home.

It’s a similar story with the mopping of the Max 705 Combo. Yes, the heated paint roller-style mop definitely provides a stronger, more sanitary scrub than Roombas with flat mopping pads or dual spinning mopping pads. But there are plenty of other roller mop robot vacuums that do the same job, aided by more powerful vacuuming and absolutely precise small obstacle avoidance – all at more practical price points than this Roomba. The fact that the most expensive Roomba still doesn’t have a livestream pet camera makes it hard for me to recommend this Roomba compared to other top robot vacuums on the market.
