‘Ride the D’: LA Metro has the internet blushing with new transit campaign

Los Angeles is finally expanding its transit system to the narrow streets of Beverly Hills, announcing Thursday that a 4-mile extension of the D Line subway will open on May 8.

Transit followers anxiously awaiting the new subway expansion have long joked about wanting to “ride the D” on Reddit and X. Metro, LA County’s transportation agency, isn’t holding back from the crude joke. The agency is selling “Ride the D” T-shirts and crop tops on its online merchandise store.

The minimalist black top is also a steal. The crop is going for $20 (excl. tax and shipping), and the tee is $21; Both were available even till Thursday evening.

Along with delight at the long-awaited project – which has been in the works for decades and has two further westward extensions that will open in 2027 and 2028 – many were surprised at Metro’s adoption of the cheeky tagline.

Metro is responding directly to riders on the X through its @metrolosangeles account, taking full advantage of the internet.

In 2007, Seattle welcomed a new streetcar line with a similarly sexualized nickname – short for the South Lake Union Trolley.
