Rian Johnson is a busy man, on to his next job knives out movie imminent, a wild poker face plan, and then his return to sci-fi on the cards (though no particular galaxy is too far away just yet). And yet, the director has spent much of the past week bracing himself for the sudden wave of disappointment after he made it clear that the strangely specific fan request to team up Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc with murder-solving Muppets wasn’t going to be on the cards.
The uproar came to a head earlier this week when Johnson jokingly called himself a hypocrite on social media for getting excited about a fan-made poster casting Miss Piggy in the hit Broadway play. Oh Mary! “After giving the Muppet a hard no.” knives out,
After lots of shocked and disappointed internet comments, Johnson took to THR’s Awards Chatter podcast to support his surprisingly controversial statement. “On the Internet, the perception of a knives out The Muppet movie comes up a lot… I wanted to bring you guys together here so I can explain why this is a bad idea,” Johnson explained.
His theory? a muppet knives out Goes one of two ways, neither of which the director likes: Put the Muppets in a Benoit Blanc movie, and they have to die (Johnson is apparently not a secret fan). The Happytime MurderPut Benoit Blanc in a Muppet movie, and the character would no longer work.
Johnson explained, “I love and respect the Muppets movies. The reality is that if you put the Muppets in a Benoit Blanc movie, it would feel completely wrong because they would be murdered.” “The alternative is to put Benoit Blanc in a Muppet movie, which would certainly be a lot of fun, but would distort the reality of what Blanc is.”
But while his firm Muppet-based beliefs mean that Knives Out: A Very Muppet Murder Mystery is off the table, that doesn’t mean Johnson would completely rule out doing his own Muppet movie — especially if it meant reuniting with last jedi Colleague.
Johnson concluded, “I would just love to do a regular Amazing Muppet movie… I’d do a Muppet caper, or my Muppet musical. Get with Frank Oz and cook something.” “It would be amazing.”
That might be lucky, considering it seems like Disney is trying to make an effort to recreate the Muppets.
