Raiders’ decision to fire OC Chip Kelly underscored lack of cohesion in building under HC Pete Carroll

How bad has it been in Las Vegas this year? The Raiders have scored 15 points per game this season, which is tied for last in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. They rank last in the NFL in yards per carry for the second consecutive season (3.5 in 2025; 3.6 in 2024).

Of course, there are other reasons for crime to rise. Carroll’s selected QB, Smith, leads the league with 13 interceptions. There is a severe shortage of talent across the board, which is why few people in the building are focused on long-term building.

Nevertheless, Carroll is also a successful coach, given his age (74 years) and the way he behaves, and which has caused some alienation. For example, many of the players the Raiders selected from the April draft played very little, which is rare among teams with poor records as they approach late in the season. Teams want to evaluate for the future. But that hasn’t happened in Las Vegas this season.

While rookies have played 1,327 snaps for the Raiders on offense and defense this season (12th fewest in the NFL), first-round running back Ashton Jeanty has played 479 of them (36%). The Raiders rookie named Jinty has only played 848 offensive and defensive snaps.

Objectionable issues have come to light.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported this last week The Rich Eisen Show Kelly occasionally botched his own play calls and, on several occasions, called plays that were not in the game plan. That’s rare in the NFL. Kelly, 62, who has committed his offense countless times, was also angry at how strict Carroll was about what he wanted to run and how he wanted it to be run. Sources say Kelly expressed frustration with the setup.

Kelly was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2024 where he helped lead the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff Championship. He had a few options before taking the Raiders OC job in February 2025, marking his return to the NFL after nearly a decade. Perhaps Kelly would have chosen a different opportunity if he had realized his lack of autonomy in Las Vegas.

For example, sources said the coaches were excited about the prospects of Kelly’s gun-based offense in the spring, but basically nothing like that ran this season. Not helping matters was the fact that Kelly’s staff consisted mostly of coaches affiliated with Carroll, including offensive line coach Brennan Carroll. This left the mix of crimes not really a mix at all.

All of this has led to a mess this season, one Las Vegas now has to pull out with six games left on the schedule.
