The box sits there and does stuff – the thermometer is output. |

I don’t know where to put this, but this also applies to the ALGOL 60 standard, which has no I/O capabilities. As I understand it, purely functional programming has no side effects. Ideally, it just takes and returns values. This is thermodynamically questionable. What will definitely be happening is that the computer is sitting there and getting hot while processing data. There is heat output and side-effects, so thermodynamically it appears that functional programming like a perpetual motion machine is impossible.
That said, there are apparently logic gates that never lose information but it’s not something I currently understand. Once again this seems thermodynamically questionable.
In the physical world, a device running a fully functional program is simply getting hotter and its heat will vary according to how intense its processing is. This means that it is indeed possible to design a functional program without any side effects from a processing point of view. When it comes to output time, binary data can be converted to serial form and then output as follows: 1 is intense computing that makes the CPU very hot, and 0 is less intense computing that does not change the temperature much. Then, aim for some kind of temperature-measuring device, also known as a thermometer, but not the mercury or alcohol type, one of those gun things for taking temperatures remotely, and monitor temperature fluctuations, possibly the rate of heating or cooling more than the actual temperature or heat, and you have the output technology for a fully functional program, and for something running on ALGOL 60.
However no input.

Possibly a cigarette lighter mounted on the input circuitry? |

It is an engine of existential anxiety; We see that it struggles, but those struggles have no apparent meaning, and then the algorithm terminates. |

I suggest it needs a friend. |

So this is how Charlie Brown stays warm because he basically has no hair? Makes sense. |
|
| |
Functionally it’s a resistor that does some 1’s and 0’s on the edge. |

Yes. But we all know it’s not alone. This could be a quick chat with the heroes. |

So…it’s playing a board game against itself, and then you hit it? |
|
| |
Perhaps. Who knows what it’s doing? |
|
| |
Well, if it’s //inducing conversations with heroes//, then it’s playing a board game against itself, or something similar. And colliding input means you hit it. |

What this means is, we are all blessed to live in interesting times. |
|
| |
It is soon going to turn into complex chaos and we are all just dust in the wind. |
|
| |
Some dust will be purchased, while others will not. |
|
| |
In another reality other dust can be purchased, while some cannot be purchased. |
|
| |
We all just need to determine which reality is ‘this’. |
|
| |
I think this is determined by consciousness, which means one person’s result will be different from another person’s. |
|
| |
There is not just one reality program running at any one time. |

They move together and overlap in their infinite probability programs whether they want to or not. |

As I contemplate the device you describe, I imagine something remarkably close to the computing device described by Douglas Adams for calculating the answers to life, the universe, and everything. |

Which makes me think – perhaps, instead of “climate change”, we should think about “computational intensity”. |
|
| |
Climate change is a hoax. |

This is real. There is no doubt about it… but this has been going on forever.. |
|
| |
…but then it should be taxed from the public?… |

Quantum computing would not exist if we did not live in the multi-verse. Every decision taken by every microbe creates a new reality. |

Your thoughts can control it…if |
