Baby macaque punch at Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo has gone viral in some heartbreaking videos. This little boy was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth and carries a plush orangutan that looks like it’s from Ikea’s Jungelskog collection. The Ikea stuffed animal is essentially a substitute mother that zoo keepers have dubbed Ora-Mama.

But if you’re looking to buy your matching orangutan from Ikea, you’re going to be in for a tough time. They are not currently available for delivery on the Ikea website and some are now selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay.

Punch was born on July 26, 2025, but was hand-reared by zoo keepers and reintroduced to his group earlier this month. As animal behavior expert Carla Litchfield recently told Australia’s ABC News, macaques usually stick to their mothers to build muscle strength and learn all kinds of social skills.

According to the Japan Times, zoo keepers initially experimented with giving Punch towels and other stuffed animals before landing on the Ikea orangutan. The viral video sparked tremendous interest in the Djungelskog Orangutan on the Ikea website, which is still listed for $20, but they appear to be all sold out.

If you want to find it you’ll have to try your luck on reseller sites like eBay, where they’re going for up to $355 to buy outright at the time of this writing. There are some that you can buy for less, especially if you’re interested in getting a smaller version of the plush toy. The Punch measures approximately 26 inches but there is also a smaller 8-inch model that looks similar. That smaller one is also sold out on the Ikea website.

When you use a site like eBay it’s a good idea to keep track of what shipping costs may be added to your order. Punch’s story has truly become a global sensation and Ikea is selling the plush doll all over the world. That $40 version from Slovakia may seem like a great deal, until you can put up with the $25 international shipping fee.

Why did Punch’s mother leave him? Zookeepers believe it may have something to do with the fact that Punch was born during a heatwave and his mother was possibly heat stressed.

In Punch’s recent viral video, an old monkey was seen violently beating him, causing him to run back to his stuffed mother for safety and comfort. The zoo issued a statement encouraging people not to be too concerned.

According to USA Today, the zoo said of the recent incident, “While Punch is scolded, he shows resiliency and mental strength.” “When you see these disciplinary behaviors from other military members toward Punch when he tries to communicate with them, we would like you to support Punch’s efforts, rather than feeling sorry for him.”

All hope is not lost for Punch, but there is still no guarantee that he will grow up to be accepted by the rest of his group at the zoo.

“Hopefully everything will work out and he’ll become part of the group, but he’ll have to integrate and learn these behaviours, otherwise he’ll be like a messed up, awkward little guy who doesn’t learn how to be a proper monkey,” Litchfield told Australia’s ABC.

Hang in there friend. We are supporting you.
