PSV trounce Liverpool as Arsenal topple Bayern while PSG and Real also win | Football News

What could have been considered a wobble appears to be a complete disaster for Arne Slot at Liverpool, with the embattled English champions losing for the third consecutive game on Wednesday.

It has now been nine defeats for Liverpool in their last 12 matches after leaving Anfield with a 4-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. The Reds were losing 3-0 to Manchester City in the Premier League before the international break and Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The pressure on the slot was increasing – an unimaginable scenario, given that Liverpool had won the Premier League title just a few months earlier – and defensive mistakes again led to his team’s defeat against PSV.

First, Virgil van Dijk’s raised hand touched the ball at a corner and gave away a penalty, which 36-year-old Ivan Perisic converted the opener for the Dutch champions.

Dominik Szoboszlai equalized after 10 minutes, but after Gus Till had given the lead for PSV, Liverpool center back Ibrahima Konate – who has been the target of criticism from fans and pundits in recent months – missed the ball wide and allowed the visitors to score again.

US forward Ricardo Pepi fired a shot against the post and Kouhab Driouch was there to convert the rebound.

Drich added a fourth in stoppage time to complete the insult.

Arsenal beats Bayern to take lead in UCL league stage

Arsenal beat Bayern Munich for the first time in a decade to maintain their 100 per cent record in this season’s Champions League with a 3-1 win, taking them top of the group.

Jurien Timber put Mikel Arteta’s side ahead from a corner after 22 minutes, only for Bayern teenager Lennart Karl to equalize in style before half-time.

However, Arsenal dominated the second half with goals from substitutes Nonny Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli, showing tremendous depth in their team and making it five wins from five.

It proved to be a quiet return to north London for Bayern’s prolific striker Harry Kane as his side suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions.

With Inter Milan dropping points, Arsenal are now the only team with a maximum of 15 points in the competition and their place in the last 16 looks almost assured.

Six points clear at the top of the Premier League and Bundesliga respectively and boasting impeccable records in the Champions League after four matches, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have been the stand-out teams in Europe this season.

The two sides met in the quarter-finals two years ago, with Bayern coming out on top, but Arsenal have reached another level since that clash and go into Wednesday’s game on a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

The last-16 spots already looked safe for both clubs, the 15th meeting between them was not in danger, but bragging rights and a psychological blow were in store.

It was Arsenal who emerged victorious, thanks to a victory that would echo across Europe.

Bayern, backed by a strong traveling army, looked confident early on, but were stunned in the 22nd minute when Arsenal scored the kind of devastating simple goal that has become their trademark.

Bukayo Saka turned in a corner, Miles Lewis-Skelley had a simple nod at Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer and the Timbers rose to put a header into the net.

However, the lead only lasted 10 minutes, as Bayern responded with another move just outside the training ground.

After a long passing sequence, Joshua Kimmich’s raking pass found Michael Olise, whose cross in front of goal was met by 17-year-old Karl, who became the first player to score against Arsenal in the Champions League this season.

While Kane was largely peripheral, Karl was impressive and perhaps should have scored again early in the second half when he broke into the area but shot straight at goalkeeper David Raya.

After this Arsenal took command.

Mikel Merino came close when he deflected a header low and wide from a Declan Rice corner, Cristian Mosquera was denied by Neuer and the keeper saved from Rice after a brilliant run from the midfielder.

Bayern’s defense was crumbling, however, and Arsenal’s pressure paid off in the 69th minute when Riccardo Calafiori fired in a cross from the left which fellow substitute Madueke headed home for his first goal for the club.

Neuer had a moment to forget when eight minutes later he fired wide of his own goal while trying to cut out Eberechi Eze’s pass, but could not get close to the ball, and Martinelli was left with the simple task of shooting into the empty net.

Mbappe scores all four as Real Madrid escape Olympiacos scare

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe scored four goals in just eight minutes, including the second-fastest hat-trick in Champions League history, to lead a 4-3 comeback win over hosts Olympiacos.

In the 22nd minute, Mbappe beat two defenders and canceled out Chiquinho’s lead in the eighth minute, assisted by Vinicius Junior. He then headed in an Arda Guler cross two minutes later and before the Greeks had time to recover from the double strike, the France forward completed his hat-trick with another superb finish.

The Spaniards hit the woodwork through Aurelien Tchoumeni in a strong first half, but the hosts reduced the deficit through Mehdi Taremi’s close-range header seven minutes after the restart, before Mbappé briefly restored order by tapping-in from another assist from Vinicius Junior.

Olympiacos scored again with Ayoub El Kaabi’s 81st-minute header, but despite late pressure, they could not score another goal as Real snapped their three-game winless streak in all competitions.

Real moved up to fifth in the league stage table with 12 points from five matches, with the top eight earning automatic qualification for the knockout stage with three match days remaining. Olympiacos are in 33rd place with two points.

UCL holders PSG hired by Tottenham

Holders Paris Saint-Germain showed a never-say-die attitude as they twice came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 in the Champions League, with two brilliant strikes from Vitinha helping Luis Enrique’s side to victory.

PSG looked vulnerable at the back, conceding twice to defensive lapses and showing some of the same problems that contributed to their 2–1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the previous round, but they responded with greater control and efficiency to turn the match around at the Parc des Princes.

Vitinha bagged a hat-trick with two excellent strikes and a penalty, while Pacho and Fabian Ruiz also scored for PSG, who were made to work by Tottenham after pushing forward twice through Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani, the France forward finishing with a double.

After four wins in five matches, PSG, who finished with 10 men after Lucas Hernandez was sent off in stoppage time, are second in the league stage standings, on course for direct qualification to the last 16, while Tottenham remain 16th with eight points.
