Priya Ferguson: On girlhood, growth and saying goodbye to stranger things

Sarah Crick

In an exclusive conversation with JIU, stranger things Star Priya Ferguson opens up about the bittersweet emotions of filming the final episode, graduating high school, and what it felt like on graduation day to move away from Hawkins.

essence th: You recently graduated from high school, congratulations! What was it like balancing regular public school life while shooting one of the biggest shows on TV?

Priya Ferguson: To be honest, it was quite easy for me to balance the two. As a young child, I had to practice effective communication and learn how to be proactive. I wanted my parents to feel confident that I could handle school and work, and I didn’t want my teachers to assume I had an ego or that they didn’t value my education. Acting is something I love, but school has always been my priority. So it wasn’t hard – it was just something I had to practice at an early age.

Th: Did public school help you stay grounded, or was it your support system?

ferguson:Definitely my support system. My little sister will humiliate me immediately if I step out of line! Public school also helped. I got to live a normal life among kids who always knew me and didn’t make a big deal about what I did. But my support system kept me grounded the most.

Th: let’s talk stranger thingsThis is the final chapter—the final season, How are you feeling?

ferguson:It’s definitely a tender moment. This show has been a part of my life for a decade, so I’m more familiar with it being there than not being there. I’m excited to move forward, but it’s bittersweet. I always looked forward to the next season to see what Erica would get to do. Knowing that feeling won’t come again when this series hits. But I’m also ready for the next thing.

Th: Did the energy feel different on set this season, because everyone knew it was the end?

ferguson: Towards the last days, yes. Going in, everyone just wanted to do the big thing one last time. We played games, had our little moments, but when people started conjuring up their characters, that’s when it felt real. The last day was emotional. I think I cried more at home knowing I would never play Erica Sinclair again. It felt like grief in a way, you’re coming to terms with something that’s been a part of you for so long.

Th:By Season 3, we actually got a chance to see more of Erica and see her become part of the main friend group. What was it like to step into that arena and become a fan favorite?

ferguson: I didn’t expect this at all. I didn’t know what the fans would think of Erica—I just wanted to do a good job. It was an honor for the Duffers to write him in a bigger role. I loved using her quick wit, but also getting to know who she is. It also helped me learn more about myself. Yes, Erica makes smart comments or says exactly what people are thinking; He is also a polymath. She can use her brain to get herself out of a difficult situation. She also found out that she was an idiot, and I think that’s beautiful for young girls to see.

Th: Did you keep anything from the set this season?

ferguson: Honestly, I didn’t! They were giving things, but my mind was somewhere else. The Duffers gifted me a framed artwork of Erica.

Th: You’ve said that you want roles that showcase more of your range. What would be your dream role?

ferguson: I can’t point to any genre or specific character. I’m a big fan of great writing. I want to tell stories that speak to Gen Z in a subtle way. I’m also big on respecting my youth. I’m not rushing into anything because I’m older now. I like the longevity of youth. I trust that what is meant for me will be meant for me.

Th: When you’re not acting, what makes you happy?

ferguson:Very, honestly, but cooking! I’m really a great cook. Last night I made homemade mashed potatoes, garlic butter steak bites, broccoli and corn with Parmesan cheese sauce. But I’m known for pineapple bowls – I cut and slice the pineapple myself and cook hibachi-style shrimp, chicken or steak inside. My family tears it up every time.

Th: looking back on everything stranger things has been for you, what nuggets of wisdom are you taking into your next chapter?

ferguson:My mom always reminds me that timing is everything. Things fall into place the way they need to be to prepare you for what’s next. I never rush into anything. If I hear “no”, I assume it’s security – maybe it wasn’t for me. I never want to be in places that aren’t for me. This role was for me and it prepared me for whatever came next.

Th:What is your advice for young black actors breaking into Hollywood?

ferguson:What’s for your trip is for your trip. Even though I was a main black character in a mostly white space, I never felt like I wasn’t supposed to be there. I’ve always been confident knowing that I’m capable of being in any place, whether I’m alone or not. Don’t make your way about comparison or competition, and surround yourself with a strong support system.

Th:What’s next for you?

ferguson:I have a podcast series coming out from creators Umbrella AcademyIt is the story of a young girl who discovers her grandfather’s hard drive, I’m also in the upcoming Basquiat film, Samo remains Starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Jeffrey Wright. I’m really excited for people to see both projects.
