Powerful winds topple tree onto Buffalo home, with family inside

The family living there said they were trapped inside the house for a moment, but eventually managed to get out safely through their back door.

BUFFALO, NY – Winter weather arrived in Western New York on Wednesday night, when a tree fell on a home in downtown Buffalo.

High winds were recorded across the region. In one instance, it downed a tree which fell onto a house on Normal Avenue.

The family living there said they were trapped inside the house for a moment, but eventually managed to get out safely through their back door.

Many trees and wires were downed across downtown Buffalo – including Norfolk Avenue and St. Louis Avenue, according to damage reports from the National Weather Service.

Temperatures were expected to drop dramatically and lake effect snow could develop Wednesday night and Thanksgiving. Winds gusting up to 50 mph are also expected to blow and blow snow and visibility will be reduced at times.

The National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning From 1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Saturday for southern Erie, Wyoming, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.

The National Weather Service also issued Winter Weather Advisory Wednesday 7 p.m. to Thursday 7 a.m. for Niagara and Orleans counties.

A Winter Weather Advisory It was issued for northern Erie and Genesee counties from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday.

The City of Buffalo announced Wednesday afternoon that it has closed the Tift Street Pier, Bird Island Pier and the Erie Basin Marina due to the risk of high winds.
