Reigning European Under-17 champions Portugal defeated Austria 1-0 to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup for the first time.

Portugal won their first FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 1–0 win against Austria in the final of the 2025 edition at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Anício Cabral scored the only goal of the game on Thursday in the 32nd minute, giving the Portuguese victory in the match, which saw both sides compete in a final at this level for the first time.

Austria’s Johannes Moser was the leading scorer in the tournament final with eight goals, but it was substitute Daniel Frauscher who came closest to equalizing for his team when he struck the post with a low drive just seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 85th minute.

Moser’s nearest rival for the Golden Boot was Cabral, who scored seven goals after his tap in following a sharp Portuguese passing move, which was enough to ensure victory for the reigning European under-17 champions.

The game was equally tight scoreline-wise, with Austria reducing the number of attempts at goal and opportunities to test the keeper from 15 to 14 and five to four respectively.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, now FIFA’s head of global football development, hailed the inaugural 48-team FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar as “football heaven”.

“This tournament will change football in the world,” the Frenchman said.

“We want every federation to make efforts to develop its youth. And at the moment, this is not the case. We believe that this tournament will inspire everyone to do more to develop their youth systems and education.”

Italy beat Brazil 4–2 on penalties in the third-place playoff after a goalless draw after normal time earlier in the day.

Italy were defeated 2–0 by Austria in the semi-finals, while Brazil lost 6–5 on penalties to Portugal in their last four match.
