Porsche’s electric Cayenne can be charged without a cable

Porsche’s largest SUV, the Cayenne, has finally gone electric, and there are a few tricks involved.

Perhaps most importantly, it is extremely fast. The fastest version, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric, has a power of up to 850kW (i.e. 1,156 horsepower), allowing it to reach 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.4 seconds, with a top speed of 260 km/h. Porsche says it is the most powerful production Porsche ever made (so, not just the most powerful Cayenne or SUV; the most powerful Porsche of any kind).

The entry-level Cayenne is slightly lower with 300kW of power and 0-100km/h acceleration of 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 230km/h.

The Cayenne also has what Porsche calls “Formula E levels of recovery,” meaning the SUV is able to handle approximately 97 percent of braking operations solely with its electric motors. Of course, for the Turbo version you’ll probably still want the (optional) Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes.

Other details include optional rear axle steering, adaptive air suspension that is standard on both the regular Cayenne and Turbo variants, and Porsche Active Ride active suspension that comes as an option and should compensate “almost perfectly” for the car’s body movements.

However, one of the details we like most is the (optional) inductive charging, which allows you to charge the Cayenne simply by parking it above the charging floor plate. The charging speed isn’t the best – 11kWh – but it’s far more practical than plugging the car in after you’ve parked.

You shouldn’t worry about charging too much with it, as it comes with a massive 113kWh battery with super speed charging (up to 400kW DC charging), which should be good for 642km WLTP range on the Cayenne Electric and 623km range on the Cayenne Turbo Electric.

Despite its power, the Cayenne Electric isn’t the most aggressive-looking SUV or even the most aggressive-looking Cayenne we’ve seen. European manufacturers like to make their electric cars softer looking, and the Cayenne Electric looks like a slightly more futuristic, but family-friendly version of the regular Cayenne. And it is a true family hauler, measuring 4,985 millimeters in length, and with 781 liters of cargo space (up to 1,588 liters with the seats folded), with an additional 90 liters in the frunk, which Porsche has fortunately included.

Inside, it’s screen over screen, as is customary for modern Porsches. You get a 14.25-inch instrument cluster, and if you tick the option box for a 14.9-inch passenger display, you’ll get the largest display area ever in a Porsche. A new feature is called Mood Modes, which allows you to choose the setting you want and have the seating position, lighting, sound profile, display appearance and even air conditioning all change to suit that mood.

We have no way to prove it, but I think these promo photos were taken in Croatia. No surprise, as Porsche co-owns Bugatti with Croatia’s electric car powerhouse Rimac.
