Plex officially ends its free remote streaming service

Media server Plex announced in March that it would end free remote streaming, but has not yet put the new changes into effect. This change happened this week plex plans First to pull the plug on free remote streaming from the Roku app, the rest of its supported platforms will arrive in early 2026.

This change affects people who use the company’s private media servers. Until now, someone could set up a server, set it up to stream remotely, and access that server from anywhere. Moreover, the person can give his/her credentials to friends and family members and they can also stream from the remote server. It was all free.

Under the new system, people can still do all of the above, they just need to have a subscription to do so. Customers have two subscriptions to choose from. The first is the exclusive Plex Pass subscription, the price of which increased to $6.99 per month in April. Plex’s second alternative was created for just this occasion. it is called remote watch passAnd it costs $2 per year.

For Remote Watch Pass, everyone who wants access to a remote server is required to have one. Thus, if you are sharing your private server with four people, each of those four people will need a Remote Watch pass. Remote streaming from within your home network is still free, so you can still set up a server on your PC and stream it to your phone from across the house.

The inclusion of a subscription may turn away some users who used Plex for a free personal media server. For those, your best option for replacement is Jellyfin. It’s a free, open-source media server that you can stream remotely, but it takes a little extra configuration compared to something like Plex.
