However, outside the existing circles of power in technology and politics, prediction markets are facing questions about insider trading (prohibited by Polymarket’s rules but difficult to enforce on any anonymity-friendly platform) and the fundamental ethics of betting on violent conflicts. In March, Arizona Attorney General Chris Mayes accused Kalshi of running an illegal gambling operation for offering betting contracts on four elections in the state.
And some prediction-market users, like some sports gamblers, seem unable to accept the reality that they have placed the wrong bet. Israeli journalist Emmanuel Fabian recently received death threats from Polymarket users demanding that he change the description of an Iranian missile attack to fit their own bets; Polymarket said it suspended users after Fabian made the harassment public.

Third-party research of cryptocurrency wallet addresses on Polymarket has shown that only a small portion of users – ranging from 7.5 percent to a “high” 30 percent – show real profits.
it’s all marketing
In some ways, marketing was surprisingly low-key at Polymarket. The location offered no discounts or freebies to patrons who opened an account or installed the platform’s apps, and the menu itself was unchanged from the bar’s usual incarnation, a sports bar called Proper 21 – barring the possibility of polymarket puns in cocktail names.
However, one of the beers I ordered came in a Situation Room-labeled pint glass. The people sitting next to me—with whom I had conversations about self-driving cars—suggested I steal it, but I limited myself to putting it in the pocket of the Situation Room coaster.
The Situation Room isn’t Polymarket’s first venture into what marketing types call “activation.” In February, it opened a grocery store in Manhattan, giving away three days of free groceries – as many shoppers could fit in a Polymarket-branded tote bag.
The company is telling other news outlets that it may consider setting up a longer-running version of the Situation Room. But even if the concept doesn’t come up again, “Will Polymarket pull more IRL marketing stunts?” This seems like the safest bet.
