Dallas Wings star guard Paige Bueckers is tired of the disrespect she and her teammates are receiving on social media, especially Instagram. The Wings are currently in rebuilding mode under new coach Jose Fernandez, who enters his first season next spring following Chris Cochrane.
Bueckers admits that, as the apparent leader of the Wings franchise, his team is not where it wants to be.
But, sitting down for an interview released Monday on the latest edition of “What Drives Winning,” Bueckers addressed the apparent concern directly.
“My individual performance could be good,” Bueckers said. “We lost as a team. Other guys didn’t have the best shooting performance or whatever. And you look at the comments in the Instagram section, you look at social media and it will say, ‘Paige needs help, Paige needs help.’ “What are we building as a team, like do I need to help my teammates be the best they can be and how can I help?”
Bueckers said the outside world is getting it 100 percent wrong when they describe Bueckers as someone who needs better talent around him. Currently, she trusts her teammates and says that eventually they will learn to consistently win together.
“It’s not that Paige needs help,” Bueckers said. “It’s (that) we all need to collectively (ask), ‘How can we all help each other better?'”
Bueckers said in short, that social media doesn’t stop her from doing what she feels is best for her team because she knows it best, has lived it and wants to continue to do it on a day-to-day basis during the season.
“People try to isolate you from the team and I’m sure we’ll talk about that,” Bueckers said. …”How can I come to work, do my job and make everyone else’s job easier?” It just messes up your mind mentally, you’re doing so much, you’re doing everything you can and no one is doing it. Like, no one is coming to work and trying to do their best.”
So, in so many words, Bueckers wants his fans and Wings fans to think before posting or reacting to something controversial because you never know how it will make the other person feel.
Because sports are so competitive, sometimes, it’s better to say nothing than to say something. So, Bueckers delivered its message loud and clear: let the professionals do what they do best.
