OpenAI has begun pilot testing of group chats within ChatGPT in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. Like group chats in messaging apps, you can create conversations with friends and family. However, in this example, ChatGPT is one of the participants, creating an itinerary when you plan a vacation, giving you ideas for renovation projects or helping you find a restaurant that everyone in the chat will enjoy if you’re planning a date night. You can also use this feature to collaborate with classmates or colleagues. For example, ChatGPT can outline reports based on articles and notes provided by you and your collaborators.
To start a group chat, you need to tap the people icon on the top right corner of the screen in any new or existing conversation. If you start from an existing chat, ChatGPT will create a new conversation without your chat history. You can then add people or share the link to a group conversation with one to 20 people, who will then set up a profile with their name, username, and a photo. Keep in mind that whoever has the link can invite people, and participants can mute or remove other participants from the chat at any time, except for the group creator. And if anyone in the chat is under 18, the chatbot automatically limits sensitive content for everyone.
Group chat responses are powered by GPT‑5.1 Auto, which can choose which model to respond to based on prompts. OpenAI says it has taught the chatbot to follow the flow of group conversations, so it knows when to remain quiet and when to respond, but participants can always summon the chatbot by mentioning “chatgpt.” The company also says that it will continue to make changes to the feature based on feedback from early users before launching it widely.
