Notification-of-transfer window changes proposed in DI men’s and women’s basketball

The Division I men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees proposed that the transfer notification window remain open for 15 days following the conclusion of the 2026 men’s and women’s Final Fours.

The recommendations must be approved by the Division I Cabinet, which is scheduled to review the proposals in January. If approved, the law would take effect in April 2026.

Under the proposals, the Division I women’s basketball notification-transfer window would open April 6-20. The transfer notification window for men will open from April 7-21.

Currently, the transfer window opens after the conclusion of the second round of the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships and remains open for 30 days.

The rationale for amending the transfer notification window in basketball includes the desire by both committees to wait until the championship is over.

Additionally, the Division I men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees proposed a change to when student-athletes can request to enter the NCAA transfer portal when there is a coaching change.

Under the proposal, once a school announces the appointment of a new head coach, there would be a five-day period for the new coaching staff and current players to meet. After that five-day period, student-athletes will have 15 days to notify their school to enter the transfer portal.

If a new head coach is not appointed within 30 days of the previous coach’s departure, student-athletes will have a 15-day window to enter the transfer portal beginning on the 31st.

However, if a coaching change is made after January 1, student-athletes will have to wait until the transfer notification window opens in April.
