Deadline exclusively revealed last December that ABC was developing a second Cheater Hawley spinoff set in Washington state.
“There’s a script, I’m making some drafts and taking some notes,” he told Deadline in May.
By the beginning of July, Newbie: Answer Serious pilot consideration was underway at ABC as part of the network’s “second cycle” strategy. As Deadline reported at the time, a pilot order was contingent on the casting of the lead role.
After a brief exploratory talent hunt, all parties took off their feet to wait for the new cycle when bigger names became available and more time was given to the script. ABC executives were looking for someone with Speedman’s caliber, which they now found in Ellis.
“I think we’re looking at shooting a pilot in the spring or late winter, so we’re preparing for that,” Hawley told Deadline in early September.
