No. 24 Football Has Two Honored by the American Conference

Irving, TX – The No. 24 Tulane football team had a pair of players recognized by the American Conference, including one player of the week, the league announced on November 24.redshirt freshman kicker patrick durkin Was recognized as the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season. He scored a total of 17 points for the Green Wave as the program defeated Temple by a 37–13 margin. The redshirt freshman’s field goals were 5 of 5, one short of the conference record, connecting from 50, 36, 38, 42 and 52 yards. Durkin also was 2-of-2 on extra points. His five field goals tied the Tulane school record. His 52-yard field goal is tied for 10th longest in school history. His 17 points were more than any Temple team scored in the entire game. This season he has scored 20 out of 21 goals. Their 1.82 field goals per game are ahead of the Americans and rank 10th nationally. Durkin’s 95.2 field goal percentage is also best in the league and ranks fifth nationally. His 93 points scored this season are ahead of all kickers in the league, ranking him fourth among all players and placing him third in the Tulane school record book for a single campaign.

redshirt senior quarterback jake retzlaff Was named to the weekly honor roll. He scored three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) while throwing for 231 yards in a 37–13 victory at Temple. His rushing touchdown was his 12th of the season, tying the school record by a quarter. He has now thrown for both a throw and a touchdown in the same game in seven games this season. Retzlaff has been recognized by the league office seven times this season.

This selection makes it the 14th time that a Tulane football player has been honored by the league office this season.

The Tulane football team (9-2, 6-1 American) has started the 2025 season with nine wins in the first 11 games, including a pair of wins over Power 4 opponents in the regular season for the first time since 1988. The win over Temple makes Tulane 6–1 or better in conference play for the fifth time in school history (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022 and 1934). For the sixth time the school has won six or more conference games between the American, CUSA and SEC.

Tulane finished the 2024 season by playing in the program’s third consecutive bowl game. This was the sixth time in the last seven years that Tulane was selected to play in a bowl game (2018 – Cure Bowl, 2019 – Armed Forces Bowl, 2020 – Famous Idaho Bowl, 2022 – Cotton Bowl, 2023 – Military Bowl and 2024 – Gasparilla Bowl). Overall, this was Tulane’s 17th bowl appearance (1932 – Rose Bowl, 1935 – Sugar Bowl, 1939 – Sugar Bowl, 1970 – Liberty Bowl, 1973 – Astros Bluebonnet Bowl, 1979 – Liberty Bowl, 1980 – Hall of Fame Bowl, 1987 – Independence Bowl, 1998 – Liberty Bowl, 2002 – Hawaii Bowl, 2013 – New Orleans, 2018 – Cure Bowl, 2019 – Armed Forces Bowl, 2020 – Famous Idaho Bowl, 2022 – Cotton Bowl, 2023 – Military Bowl and 2024 – Gasparilla Bowl) with the program having an all-time record of 7–10 in bowl games. Tulane marked the team’s third consecutive U.S. Championship Game appearance in 2024.

The program has a record of 41–12 over the last four seasons.

head coach John Sumrall Has been one of the most successful coaches in the country with a 41-11 record, two Sun Belt Conference championships and a double-digit winning streak over the past four seasons. He was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year and twice was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year honor. Sumrall returned to Tulane after serving as the Green Wave’s co-defensive coordinator for three years (2012–14). In 2013, he was a key part of Tulane’s run to the New Orleans Bowl, the program’s first postseason appearance since 2002 and third since 1988. Sumrall was also named a finalist for FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year.

Next, the Tulane football team will face Charlotte (1-10, 0-7 American) at Yulman Stadium in the final game of the regular season on November 29 at 6:30 p.m., which will also be televised on ESPNU.
