Why early access?
“NIMBY Rails is our most personal and most ambitious game. After playing thousands of hours of transportation simulation games, we were left wondering what might have happened if some of the traditional limitations of the genre did not exist: in map size, track layout complexity, or train scheduling. NIMBY Rails was born out of a desire to play a game without these limitations. From a desire to blur the lines between a game and a real-world design tool. The result is unconventional and risky. Early Access will help the game’s development by proving our concept to a wider audience. There are still many interesting features left to implement, test and refine. Early Access will give us both additional time and feedback from the community to make the best game possible.
Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“We work on delivering a solid major version every quarter, including major new features and a myriad of smaller enhancements and QoL improvements. This pace of development has worked out great for the first year of Early Access. The roadmap is now certainly shorter than at launch, but we prefer not to have a fixed release date on its completion, and we’d like to move the final release date forward rather than put a hard deadline on its development, and remain in Early Access. Are.”
How do you plan to make the full version different from the Early Access version?
“Here’s a high-level roadmap of planned, pending features. Many of the items already on this list have been completed during EA’s first year. But some may not ultimately make it into the game.
- Player-built buildings with gameplay effects
- Real-time based, fixed timetables for trains
- Linked, Complex, Programmable Signaling
- NIMBYism: Your building choices have political consequences
- public works contract
- Improved impact of real-world population on traffic demand and non-population effects
- procedural building construction
- ruleset modding
- Freeform train structure at the player UI level, not just in mods
”
What is the current status of the Early Access version?
“The game is fully playable as both offline single player and cooperative multiplayer. All areas of gameplay described in the store description are present starting from the first public version. But keep in mind that it relies heavily on the sandbox aspect, lacking more directed gameplay features like a campaign mode.”
Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“There will be a slight price increase after Early Access.”
How do you plan to involve the community in your development process?
“We’ll be regularly publishing new versions documenting the development process, gameplay changes, and additions for our community to play. The feedback we get from our players will be invaluable to furthering the game’s development. The developer is active in the Steam Forum and our own Discord server and responds directly to player questions. We’ve also been supporting Steam Workshop mods since day one and we can’t wait to see what train design, track, and building modders come up with.”
