Nebraska has reportedly parted ways with defensive coordinator John Butler
And welcome to Big Red Zone Game Day. I’m Lauren Michelson, not Senior Day. Nebraska was hoping. The Heroes Trophy isn’t coming back to Lincoln because Iowa wins again. Hawkeyes win seven straight over Huskers. While Nebraska’s head coach, freshman quarterback TJ Latif, is making his first start at Memorial Stadium, the Mets have fallen to two and ten in November games. Not what he wanted in his debut there. First Quarter Emmitt Johnson, one of the day’s little bright spots, had a 71-yard run that makes it look easy, the longest of his career, initially ruled a touchdown call back, saying he was down on the six-inch line. On the next play, EJ goes up and into the end zone as the Huskers take a seven to zero lead. Late in the first, Gronowski hit a wide open DJ Von of Miami for a 35-yard touchdown. On the ensuing drive the Hawkeyes took a ten to seven lead over the Huskers. TJ Latif found Johnson again on a physical catch and run for a 13-yard pickup. The Huskers settle for a field goal to complete the drive. Kyle Cunanan, from 31 yards out, ties it at ten. Cunanan went three for three today. Now the second quarter, the quarterback run game has been an issue for the Huskers all season long, and Iowa was no different. Gronkowski broke free to run for 29 yards. Then just a few plays later, Kamari Moulton finished the job. The Hawkeyes are back in front, 1713. Iowa led 2416, in the half of the break. Nothing going Nebraska’s way as Zackary Barney is messing up returns. Isaiah Hunter recovers it in the end zone. So that’s an Iowa Hawkeyes lead, 2616. A bad situation gets worse as Gronowski and the Huskers continue to put it on a six yard touchdown As Gronowski says goodbye to the fans, the exits begin to flow out of Memorial Stadium, the Hawkeyes shut out the Huskers in the second half, keeping the Heroes Trophy 4016. Final. By the numbers, Iowa rushed for 379 yards, but had no answer for Gronowski’s big plays, both on the ground and in the air. The Huskers struggled in the passing game. TJ Latif completed only 38% of his passes. As you look at the statistics here, time, possession, a little bit less, a third less efficiency. Still a burning issue for Nebraska. Only five out of 15. Now Andy Kenny is here with the postgame story from Memorial Stadium. Well, the Iowa Hawkeyes’ dominance over the Nebraska Cornhuskers continues. It is now three wins in a row and ten from the last 11 meetings. The Hawkeyes’ Heroes are taking home the game’s trophy. But unlike some previous meetings, this meeting was not decided in the last few seconds. It was decided in the third quarter as the Hawkeyes outscored the Huskers by 16, left nothing in the second half and won 40 to 16. I am the one you know, I will be the first one to say that this is unacceptable and I definitely understand. I definitely understand how all of our great fans feel about this. The student section is full. People come to the game and. I understand his disappointment. Play of the game, early in the third quarter, Jacory Barney comes back down the field and he throws it, drops it, picks it up, gets hit. Balls became loose in the end zone. The ball is free. Zameer Khan got it. The ball is still loose in the back of the end zone. This should be a security. Yes. You know he’s a great great returner. His second return was a dynamic return. They told you about personal foul play to bring it back. but you know. I don’t think this game was possibly the end of everything. But it certainly didn’t help that the Huskers were wasting a career day from Emmett Johnson, who rushed for a career-high 217 yards and a touchdown. We can talk a lot about what I got out of it, but if we didn’t win the game, I wouldn’t be really happy. So me, my job is just to help this team win. And it has always been that way. And so I’m not going to make this all about me. I want to win for this program. I want Nebraska to win football games. And that’s all I care about. For the second consecutive season the Huskers lost three of their final four games, all in November, and they lost to their biggest rival. I feel like it’s mostly my fault. I had a lot of opportunities to make plays, a lot of opportunities to change the game and make a positive impact on the team. And I did not create those plays. I just want to not be super toxic towards the players because I want them to put it on me like I’m in charge of it, you know, like, you know, Troy and he, they kind of brought me up like they believe in what we’re doing. And then all of a sudden we’re down, we lose these last two games. I’m – myself I’m like I don’t, you know, but I know where we’re going. I know what we’re doing. I know where we are headed. And so I just. I believe in what we are doing. I believe in recruits who are bought in America. I believe in signing class Wednesdays. And so I don’t want to overreact. So now the Huskers play the waiting game. They end seasons seven and five. They will know their fate next Sunday. But all signs point to Las Vegas reporting from Lincoln Memorial Stadium. Andy Kendagh. KTV Newswatch Seven Sports Andy Thanks Iowa ranks eighth nationally in total defense and scoring defense While the Hawkeye offense stole the show today, the game ball went to one of their defensive stars, however, after a milestone week, our Matt Sottile is now here with the final drive from Lincoln. In what turned out to be a whirlwind Thanksgiving day for Iowa defensive lineman Aaron, his wife Aubree gave birth to their first child, Grayson. 24 hours later, Aaron stood at the podium after being awarded the game ball following Iowa’s 42–16 victory over Nebraska. Apologize. Yeah, I mean, I told Aubrey when I left, I was like, yeah, we’re not leaving you here in the hospital. So I believed we’d better win this strange game. To me, today’s game really represents the kind of people we have on this football team. And, you know, they really understand what it means to go out and fight and compete for the full 60. And that’s what the game really is. The Hawkeyes celebrated in front of a nearly empty Memorial Stadium, including South Dakota State transfer Mark Gronowski, who led the charge on offense in his first Heroes Game. Yeah, just, you know, just said goodbye to them and ended the game. So, you know, they’re talking trash all day long. You can hear him behind us. And it was kind of nice to have him away. This is absolutely amazing, man. As I said in the third quarter clearing the way for the fans, everyone was stepping up and it was amazing to see the team come together and get the win we did. Iowa has won eight regular season games in every full season since 2015. They are one of four programs in the entire country to do so. Joining Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. Lincoln, Matt Sottill The definition of consistency covering the Huskers and Hawkeyes at KTV Newswatch Seven Sports. Thanks Matt. Despite the loss, Emma Johnson is an undeniable bright spot for the Huskers. Career-high 217 yards rushing, plus a touchdown, the most yards in a game by a Husker back since Ameer Abdullah against Rutgers. More than 11 years ago. However, Johnson has some big decisions to make. Will he play in a bowl game? Stay at Nebraska or declare for the NFL Draft? No decision was shared today, but Johnson says he will talk to his family about it. Now here’s Andy Kendey and Sean Callahan with the extra point. Okay, extra time. Shawn, there’s not much to say about this. After missing several chances early, the Huskers were physically beaten up front, especially in that second half. The story of the game was touchdown versus field goal. Iowa had three consecutive touchdown drives. Nebraska had three consecutive field goal drives, and that looked like the early margin. But from that point on, there wasn’t much margin for error. And I feel like the point that turned the game was a fumble in the end zone that led to a safety. And then from that point on, the game never felt the same. Yep, made it a two-point game. And how about Kirk Ferentz? Give her her flowers. That guy owns the Nebraska Seven outright in Lincoln Andy. And to put it in perspective, no other head coach in the history of Nebraska football has won seven consecutive times as the opposing head coach. Oklahoma’s legendary head coach Bud Wilkinson won six in a row. Now, Kirk Ferentz has taken the top spot with seven straight. Yes, Kirk Ferentz is now 11 and six against Nebraska. His Iowa Hawkeyes finished the season at eight and four. nebraska, seven a
