Musk claims Tesla will restart work on its Dojo supercomputer

Elon Musk said that Tesla will resume work on its third generation Dojo3. The Dojo team was in place since the company prioritized running on Tesla vehicles. Musk said the company is returning to the project “now that the AI5 chip design is in good shape.”

The Dojo project aims to process video recordings and other data from Tesla vehicles and use the “neural net” behind the company’s full self-driving software. However, last year Musk said that “It doesn’t make sense for Tesla to split its resources and scale two completely different AI chip designs. The Tesla AI5, AI6 and subsequent chips will be excellent for inference and at least very good for training. All the effort is focused on that.”

The AI chips Musk is referring to are installed on Tesla vehicles and are not optimized for training. After the $16 billion agreement with Tesla, AI6 chips will be in the company’s Texas factory.

Musk has also made a lot of claims over the years, and many of those claims were either misrepresentations or turned out to be simply not true. Working against this chip project: Musk said that Dojo3 will be a “space-based AI computation”, as that is a better option than what is currently being manufactured. The idea is that space provides easy access to the Sun’s energy, and the cooler temperatures there can significantly reduce the electricity needed, among other benefits. However, experts say that this is a completely imaginary idea.
