Mike Elko’s wife made feelings clear on Texas A&M before coach’s big extension – Football – Sports

Mike Elko’s wife made sure to let him know even before he signed his new six-year, $11 million-per-season deal with Texas A&M that his future lies in College Station.

The Aggies head coach signed new terms with the program in the wake of the Week 12 win over South Carolina on November 15, and has since rewarded the university’s faith in him by extending their winning streak and improving their record to 11-0 (7-0 SEC) with a win over Samford last weekend.

Texas A&M, ranked No. 3 heading into Saturday’s final regular season game against rival Texas, is now certain to make the College Football Playoff, marking the first time it has competed in a postseason tournament.

Even if there were any doubts about Elko’s future, given the number of vacant head coaching roles in some of college football’s elite ranks, his wife Michelle quickly erased them with her comments on The Aggie Football Hour last month.

At one point during the show on October 22, host Andrew Monaco jokingly asked Elko, “Which one are you taking?” Before listing several coaching vacancies at places like Penn State, Oklahoma State, Florida and Virginia Tech.

Elko, to his credit, took it in good humor, asking, “Is that what we’re doing now?” Before saying he would like Texas A&M to have one. “Let’s do this,” he said, causing the audience to applaud.

He then pointed to Michel and said that any decision would require his consent. “Why don’t you go over there and talk to the boss lady and ask her a question about where we’re going, and see what she says.”

As Monaco begins to speak again, Michelle’s voice can be heard from the back of the room, saying, “We’re not going anywhere,” to the amusement of the show’s host and audience.

Elko then jokingly commented that “the guy back there makes all the calls and all the decisions,” and that he “has nothing to do with anything”, effectively calming any concerns about him leaving the Aggies at the end of the season.

The second-year coach has turned Texas A&M into a powerhouse in 2025, leading it to a No. 3 ranking in the AP Poll — which it has held since defeating Arkansas on Oct. 18 — and wins against teams like Notre Dame, LSU and Missouri.

Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban even claimed that the Aggies are “a cut above” other college football powerhouses at the moment, and now their goal will be to not only secure the SEC Championship but also make a significant impact in the CFP.

Elko took over at Kyle Field as Jimbo Fisher’s permanent successor in November 2023, but did not lead his first Texas A&M game until the start of the 2024 season nine months later.

Since then, the Aggies have compiled an impressive 19–5 (12–3) record under his leadership, and are eyeing their first national championship since 1939 by year’s end.
