Meta has discontinued its metaverse for work, too

Meta will no longer sell its headsets and software as a service to businesses, another support page reads: “We are stopping the sale of commercial SKUs of Meta Horizon Managed Services and Meta Quest effective February 20, 2026.”

Meta eliminated more than 1,000 jobs, about 10 percent of its entire Reality Labs division. Subsequently, it is becoming clear that Zuckerberg has changed his mind about what the term “metaverse” actually means. Mobile yes, smart glasses yes, but probably not VR.

What’s next, Horizon Worlds? Perhaps Meta will draw the line there, as this is one of the few VR experiences Meta has also made available on mobile phones; Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth previously said that the company’s Horizon team will “work twice as hard to bring the best Horizon experiences and AI creator tools to mobile”. bloomberg.

bloomberg writes that “Meta will continue development of the Metaverse, but will focus on mobile phones rather than the fully immersive VR headsets the company had initially envisioned.” To be clear, the term “metaverse” was coined by snow accident Author Neal Stephenson describes the massively shared VR world perfectly, but I think mobile makes sense if you consider Fortnite There doesn’t need to be any more “fully immersive” part to be a metaverse.

It appears that Meta Workrooms will be shutting down suddenly on February 16th, to the extent that “any data associated with the Workrooms will be deleted.” The company recommends trying Arthur, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom Workplace instead, and also writes that the Meta Quest Remote Desktop app will be there if you want to simulate multiple virtual monitors in your headset.

As for Meta Horizon managed services, the company writes that existing customers can continue to access them until January 4, 2030, and licenses will be free after February 16 this year.
