Written by Steve Fox and drawn by artist Salva Espin – who also drew a prologue comic for season one – this new five-issue series focuses on Bishop, Sunspot, Jubilee and Forge, who survived the present day at the end of the previous season. With other X-Men scattered across different timelines, this group is left to protect the mutant race and perhaps find a way to help their displaced friends find their way back home.
Interestingly, the comic won’t set up plot events just for the sake of paying off. X-Men ’97 Appropriate: Its press release mentions a spotlight on “major new characters—and teams—joining the cast.” Previous seasons featured numerous references and cameos to the X-Men and other Marvel characters and referenced teams such as the X-Force. It seems like Fox has quite a sandbox to play in, as he said the comic “takes no cheats or shortcuts [season one’s] Wild status quo. We need to work closely with the series team to ensure that this comic is an important, relatable experience for us mutants – what is left of the X-Men, anyway.”
X-Men ’97: Season Two The comic will launch on June 3, with the show’s second season premiering on Disney+ in the next few weeks.
