Atlanta police said officers responded to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Sunday where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Through their investigation, police said 59-year-old Douglas Smith pulled out a handgun and intentionally shot himself in the upper left torso.
Police said the shooting occurred near the baggage claim area after Smith reached the top of the escalator. He was charged with reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Police said he was alert, conscious and breathing and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Atlanta Police said that airport operations have not been affected at this time. He posted the following news conference on his Facebook page:
