Getting around could be a challenge for millions of people in the Northeast US on Tuesday as the region’s first winter storm intensifies.
A low pressure system moving from Pennsylvania to Maine is expected to dump 6 inches or more of snow in several states and disrupt commutes Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters also say parts of Appalachia – especially areas along the border between Virginia and West Virginia – will see widespread snowfall that could create dangerous conditions on roads and sidewalks.
“If you must travel, please use caution, make sure you have winter emergency supplies in your home and car, and check on your neighbors — especially older people — who may need help,” Maine Gov. Janet Mills said in a statement. Parts of Down East Maine could see up to a foot of snow.
In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for five counties in the northern tip of the state, which are expected to be most affected by the storm system.
The cold forecast for the Northeast comes after heavy snowfall in many Midwest states over the busy travel weekend. Snowfall ranging from 6 to 11 inches fell across northwestern Indiana and northern Illinois, where Chicago set a new record for the most snowfall in a November day. In Milwaukee, where local officials declared a snow emergency, snowfall totals ranged from 6 inches to a foot.

Federal forecasters now say parts of New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine could get at least a half-inch of snowfall by Wednesday morning. The heaviest snowfall could occur across a large swath of land from the Poconos of Pennsylvania to coastal Maine, where 5 to 10 inches of snowfall is possible. The NWS warned that more than an inch of snow could fall per hour.
This system will move out of the Northeast and move into Canada by Wednesday morning.
Across the country, a separate winter storm system was expected to bring snow to parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming from Tuesday evening to Thursday morning. The NWS office in Boulder warned locals to prepare for “slow, slow and dangerous travel Wednesday morning.”
