Louisville makes changes to snow plan ahead of potentially busy winter weather season

Louisville, Ky. (Wave) – Hundreds of people, dozens of trucks and thousands of pounds of salt. The changes were made ahead of this year’s inclement winter weather, following last year’s historic snowy season, according to Louisville Metro Public Works and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg.

“We’ve updated our equipment, our routes, we’ve improved coordination and communication across our departments,” Greenberg said.

This year there are eight new dump trucks, three new pickup trucks, 16 new brine tanks and upgrades to real snowplow blades, making them stronger to last longer on the roads in the future.

The snow team now consists of more than 200 people using more than 100 pieces of snow-fighting equipment and 32,000 tons of salt. The Public Works team also plans to add more salt this year, allowing the city to treat roads in advance.

“Bringing is a liquid mixture of salt and water that helps keep snow from sticking to sidewalks before a storm hits,” said Bill Bell, director of the Louisville Metro Transportation Department.

There’s also a new, interactive one in town metro snow mapIf residents are wondering if a street near them is being plowed, they can check the status on that map, The mayor said the road snow map had not been updated in more than a decade, and now includes new roads that will be developed in the city, If your road is not on an icy road, Metro will not repair your road and you will need to make other plans,

“Our snow routes are focused on roads that carry the most traffic and that are critical to connecting people to major employment areas, neighborhoods, schools, medical facilities and hospitals,” Bell said.
