Winter weather conditions are causing traffic problems and school closures across Central Missouri.

Monday is the first alert weather day due to travel impacts.

According to the First Alert weather team, snowfall is expected to be heaviest from noon to 10 p.m., with snowfall reducing visibility and creating icy patches during evening travel.

12:38 pm: MU Emergency reminds drivers that parking is prohibited on priority snow routes

MU Emergency announced Monday that street parking is prohibited on first and second priority snow routes.

According to a text message from MU Emergency, drivers are being asked to move their vehicles off first and second priority roads so crews can clear the roads.

First and second priority roads can be found online at the City of Columbia Snow and Ice Management website.

12:25 p.m.: Crash blocks traffic on Missouri River bridge in Jefferson City

A crash on westbound US 63/US 54 is causing traffic delays on the Missouri River Bridge, according to the Jefferson City Police Department.

The police department said on social media that traffic had returned to normal by 12:40 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the eastbound lanes of the Missouri River Bridge due to an accident.

11:59 am: COU flights to Chicago and Dallas canceled

Two flights were canceled at Columbia Regional Airport on Monday amid winter weather.

According to CU’s online flight status tracker, American Airlines Flight 4228 to Chicago was scheduled to depart at 12:28 p.m. and was cancelled.

American Airlines Flight 3853 to Dallas/Ft. Worth was scheduled to depart at 5:58 pm and was also cancelled.

11:54 am: Boone County dispatchers ask drivers to stay home

Boone County Joint Communications sent out an alert at 11:54 a.m. asking people to stay home amid poor road conditions.

“Roads in Boone County are deteriorating rapidly,” the message said. “Emergency crews are working with road crews as quickly as possible. Please stay home if possible.”

11:46 am: City of Sedalia declares snow emergency

The city of Sedalia declared a snow emergency Monday amid winter weather. Snow routes are now in effect.

According to a news release, city leaders declare a snow emergency when more than two inches of snowfall, sleet or ice is expected to fall within a 24-hour period.

The city of Sedalia said its snow routes help improve traffic flow by allowing crews to move faster when clearing snow and ice.

Drivers are encouraged to give way to heavy equipment and salt spreaders while working.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating a crash that blocked the exit ramp from eastbound I-70 to US 63 in Columbia, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F. The accident reopened by noon.

11:15 am: Colombia’s roads cleared due to snowfall

Columbia Department of Public Works Street Division crews are responding to winter weather across the city.

According to a news release from the city, the city’s first priority will be to clear major residential and main streets used for public safety needs.

This will be followed by heavily traveled collector and residential roads, city and school bus routes, roads leading to schools, hospitals and other major locations.
