Observer Online It is understood Dunbar died suddenly at home on Monday morning. He was 73 years old.
Dunbar played on and produced countless hit songs with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, who died in 2021.
After the news of Dunbar’s demise, tributes are being paid to him from all over the world.
Noted British disc jock David Rodigan called Dunbar “one of the greatest drummers of all time”, noting that reggae has lost a true icon.
“He was much loved, this is a tragic loss,” Rodigan wrote on Instagram. “He produced records and contributed to reggae, rock and pop with Bob Dylan, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Grace Jones, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Sting and many others.”
Singjay Mr. Vegas called Sly his “greatest teacher/producer”.
“Rest in peace, Daddy Sly Dunbar! You influenced our culture so much! Fly high!!!” He said.
Meanwhile, Sound System pioneer Rory Stone Love said it was a “sad day” for Jamaica and reggae.
“We have lost one of our great men,” he said.
