Lady Gaga Reveals Her Reaction to All the ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Hate

Joker: Folie A Deux was one of the most divisive film releases of 2024—in a bad way. This reaction came in complete contrast to 2019 Jokerwhich also polarized audiences, but ultimately the wave of controversy carried over to box-office glory as well as Oscar glory, with Joaquin Phoenix winning Best Actor and the film garnering other top nominations, including Best Picture. Its unsatisfactory musical sequel faced critical and commercial disdain, although Lady Gaga’s performance was often cited as a rare bright spot.

A year later, with a hit album and world tour, she’s currently wasting her time, and some distance has come between her and Joker: Folie A DeuxLady Gaga—who also made a fun cameo Wednesday‘s second season—the failure—takes a look at in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

When asked about the whole thing, she said, “I wasn’t surprised at all.” joker 2 Hatred. “It’s funny, I’m almost nervous to share my reaction. But the truth is, when it first started happening, I started laughing. Because it was getting so out of control… When something takes a while to get over, it can be a little more painful. Just because I’ve put so much of myself into it.”

She told Rolling Stone that she was able to portray “a lot of the negativity that was around.” Jokerand cited it as a creative inspiration, saying that she was “feeling artistically rebellious at the time.” The first single, “Disease,” and the resulting music video for her latest release, DestructionOffered a seemingly cathartic experience.

“I put a lot of energy into that video,” she explained. “I was in that place, you know, I was like, ‘I’ll show you who I am, and I’ll show you what this fight is like.'”
