Neuralink is the brainchild of fellow billionaire and co-founder Elon Musk, launched publicly in 2017 and published its first research in 2023. The company is committed to ushering in a new era of super intelligence based on implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCI). In 2024, Musk said the company has “successfully” implanted a chip in the brain of a human subject — marking the beginning of long-rumored human trials that began with 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh. In the company’s June update, Neuralink co-founders said they were testing a “consensual telepathy tool” that would let people exchange information in the blink of an eye and another that could restore partial vision in blind people.
Other brain chip companies are also testing the technology, such as US-based Synchron and BlackRock Neurotech, and research projects, such as BrainGate, based at Brown University. Regulators such as the FDA have been hesitant to approve chip trials, while a growing number of individuals and neuroscience companies have asserted that implantable computer chips are the future of medicine.
What better way to speed up adoption, the internet suggests, than to be the first to spur adoption by one of the wealthiest celebrities alive?
In addition to the suggested profit motives, many users suspected that Kardashian’s brain activity may be an unacknowledged side effect of long-term COVID. She suggested that instead of accepting the still-unknown consequences of a largely disabling phenomenon and investing in evidence-backed science, she might move in a more experimental direction, as some other celebrities and politicians have done.
