KDE Plasma 6.8 Will Go Wayland-Exclusive In Dropping X11 Session Support

KDE

KDE developers announced that they are going “all-in on a Wayland future” and with the Plasma 6.8 desktop it will become Wayland-exclusive. Plasma X11 session expiring.
KDE developers announced with Plasma 6.8 that it would be Wayland-exclusive in removing Plasma X11 session support, although X11 apps/games would continue to be supported through XWayland.

KDE developers report that “the majority of our users are already using Wayland sessions” and that in the long run this change will allow new features, customizations, and greater development speed with the foregoing X11 session support.

With Plasma release timing, this means that Plasma X11 session support will continue to be supported with the Plasma 6.7 series into early 2027. The Plasma 6.7 release may see some additional bug-fix releases for X11 holdouts.
