“The seatbelt is coming off the driver’s side,” the judge said. “Now you’re lying to me, aren’t you?”
“No, I’m not sir.”
At this point, the frustrated judge demanded that Carroll “let me see the driver.”
But he did not show him the driver. Instead, he said, “Wait a second.”
“Now!” The judge roared.
“I have to get their permission,” he said.
But he did not ask permission from anyone. Instead, the car stopped at a gas station. Carroll picked up the phone, opened the car door, and got out… from what appeared to be the driver’s side of a vehicle.
At this point the angry judge was ready to call a hearing.
“You think I’m that stupid?” He said. “I will go ahead and enter a default judgment… You lied to me.”
He instructed a court official to note that Carroll was driving, even though he told the court that he was not. He will have to pay the full amount of the claim and some court costs in the case.
The judge concluded the hearing by saying, “Have a nice day.” “Thank you.”
“A viral spectacle”
Fox 2 News from Detroit was able to contact Carroll, who denied in a statement to the judge: Yes, she was driving.
She took responsibility for “my mistake”, saying “I panicked at that moment and made the wrong call instead of asking for a change or changing the time. For that, I’m really sorry.”
But Carol was unhappy that her “brief moment of poor judgment” had turned into a “viral spectacle that is affecting my reputation, my family, and my ability to move on with my life.”
