Jonathan Scott goes through the process of putting up his elaborate holiday decorations at his and fiancée Zooey Deschanel’s L.A. family home.
While chatting with People about his and brother Drew’s new partnership with WoodVeneer Hub, Jonathan said that he and Deschanel always start decorating their recently completely renovated abode in November. He says the entire “Christmas Makeover” takes about a week to complete just for the interior decorations.
“I start on the inside because it takes us about five or six days to do everything inside,” he says, adding that he typically recruits Glitterville studio expert Stephen Brown to help bring his vision to life.
He adds, “And then what we do is we wait until the actual Thanksgiving passes and then we change the outdoor decorations, the street decorations and things like that.”
Last year, Jonathan gave a tour of their “very whimsical,” winter wonderland-themed holiday decorations in a video posted to his and brother Drew’s YouTube channel.
“There are a lot of different rules when decorating for the holidays,” Jonathan said in the clip. “But, of course, as we know, rules are meant to be broken, so it really depends on your comfort level.”
Throughout the tour, colorful trees can be seen carefully placed around the house along with glass ornaments and trinkets. The railings are studded with pink and green baubles, velvet ribbons and leafy garlands. On top of some shelves, pink and white branches with tiny lights create a magical forest effect.
Jonathan and Zooey are also big into DIY projects at their home. She highlighted some of the cardboard mistletoe bunches displayed in the home, which she says are a great way to incorporate crafts with kids during the holiday season.
And when it comes to kids, he says it’s important to establish “ground rules” regarding any delicate decorations throughout the house.
“One of the really big (rules) is that, if you have small children or large animals, you have to be careful with things that they can drop and things that can break, like glass,” he advised. “Now, we have a lot of glass, a lot of tinsel; however, we also have some ground rules, and well, kids are really good at not dropping things.”
Jonathan is soon to become stepfather to Deschanel’s two children — daughter Elsie Otter, 10, and son Charlie Wolf, 8 — whom she shares with her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

The couple, who got engaged in August 2023, clearly goes above and beyond with their holiday decorations, as they celebrate.
During an interview with PEOPLE in December 2023, Drew explained how his twin brother and his fiancée were planning to make the holiday season special that year.
“Because there’s no snow here in L.A., Jonathan got a snow machine, so he’s going to make a snow sled. So we’ll bring (my son) Parker, and all the other kids will be there. It’s going to be very exciting,” said Drew, who shares son Parker, 3, and daughter Piper, 1, with wife Linda Fan.
