Groff is set to perform with the cast of Broadway’s “Just in Time” in the 2025 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday. However, the Tony-winning actor laughed while sharing details about his outfit for the occasion on “Today with Jenna & Friends” on Monday.
“I’ll brave the cold in a costume,” Groff said. “I have decided not to wear any undergarments.”
Quickly noticing the flub, he quickly clarified, “Any Excessive Undergarments.”
Despite the attempt to course-correct, guest host Andy Cohen joked about what might have happened if Groff opted for the “free ball” during the parade, before telling the actor: “You need long underwear!”
“I don’t know what we say ‘free ball’ on morning television,” host Jenna Bush Hager then quipped.

Groff is promoting the filmed version of the 2023 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” which opens in theaters next week. Both he and Daniel Radcliffe received Tonys for their performances in the musical, which also starred Lindsay Mendez.
From now through March, Broadway fans can see Groff in the musical “Just in Time,” in which he plays pop singer Bobby Darin, best known for 1950s and ’60s hits like “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover.”
Although it is unknown whether Darin chose to wear undergarments during his performances, Groff has suggested that the legendary singer – who died in 1973 at the age of 37 – had some mysterious secrets of his own.
“This guy is fire. He’s an incredible artist and really special,” Groff said last year during an appearance on Andrew Chappell and Cody Rigsby’s “Tactful Patience” podcast. “I read this book about him, where he talked to the audience about his relationships. For example, he used to wear a condom when he went on stage, so he wouldn’t ejaculate.”
And when Groff began working on “Just in Time”, he said, he found himself similarly, um, excited: “I felt some tingling.”
