Joe Montana volunteers to feed the hungry
Hall of Famer Joe Montana is giving back to the community with Game Day Beer. Proceeds from their special-release Guinness Legends Lager will benefit the SF-Marin Food Bank.
san francisco – Joe Montana spent the afternoon packaging food at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank on Pennsylvania Avenue for a one-day service.

what do we know:
They created a special lager with Guinness called Legends Lager, and up to $35,000 of the proceeds from the lager will be donated to food banks to help feed the hungry in Northern California.
Tannis Crosby, executive director of the SF-Marin Food Bank, welcomed her to Montana on Wednesday, where dozens of volunteers were ready to work as part of a program called Guinness Gives Back.
“Joe Montana is a legend, he’s a leader, he has a big heart and he cares about eradicating hunger in our community,” Crosby said.
“We’ve done this in a lot of communities, but it’s a little special to do it where you live,” Montana said.
The team of volunteers, together with Guinness staff and food bank personnel, sorted hundreds of grapes from a local farmer to distribute to more than 200 partner sites in the Bay Area.
For volunteers like Lisa Garcia, serving with the great man himself was special.
Garcia said, “I’ve been a huge fan of Joe Montana since I was a kid. My kids have grown up knowing about Montana and all the famous players during Super Bowls, so I’m really honored.”
George Garcia, who works for the SF-Marin Food Bank, said that was the last time he saw Montana. “He came here about 10 years ago, so it’s been a while, but he’s been great to work with.”
49ers hall of famer
Volunteers said it’s a gift to give back and see the 49ers Hall of Famer making service a priority.
“People are struggling out there, they’re having a tough time, so it feels good that we’re able to do this,” Garcia said.
The beer, described as a light, crisp wheat lager, is inspired by Montana’s travels abroad and his love for his community, the very thing that has led him to his success.
“It’s hard to put a price on the friendships I’ve made,” he said. He also said that he still meets some of his old teammates.
The lager is only available for a limited time in the Bay Area, with only 7,000 four-packs made.
“I hope people go there and enjoy it and feel good about giving back,” he said.
Guinness said that for every four-pack of Legends Lager, $5 will be donated to the SF-Marin Food Bank.
Montana, who is leading the coin toss in the Super Bowl, said he is placing his bets on the Seattle Seahawks taking home the Lombardi Trophy this weekend.
