The left-wing party formed by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana has revealed a short list of names to choose from for its members: Your Party, Our Party, Popular Coalition and many more.
Ahead of its first conference in Liverpool this weekend, the party is asking its 50,000 members to vote on what it should be called, with the results to be announced by Corbyn on Sunday.
It was temporarily named Your Party when it launched in the summer, but the organization has been mired in controversy and infighting for months since then.
Corbyn and Sultana have been at odds over how it was launched and how the money raised from members should be kept.
It also attracted other independent MPs, including Ayub Khan and Shawkat Adam, but two more MPs, Iqbal Mohammed and Adnan Hussain, have already stepped down amid persistent infighting and power struggles in the organisation.
More than 2,500 members are expected to attend the Liverpool event after being selected through a lottery system and agreeing to the party’s structures, program and organizational strategy.
An important question up for debate is whether the party should adopt a single leader or a “collective, common-member leadership model”. They will also decide whether the party should support socialist independent candidates in the 2026 English local elections.
Each of the party’s MPs is expected to deliver a speech alongside a range of grassroots community organizers and left-wing politicians from across Europe.
Ahead of the conference, Corbyn said: “Over the past few months I have traveled all over the country, talking to people, and learning about their vision for a single-member-led party.
“I’m very excited to launch this party and begin the work of building a majority for real political change. This is our chance to build a people’s, democratic, socialist party that can be a voice for economic justice and peace.”
Your party said that its approach to the conference shows that it is ready to do politics differently.
Sultana said: “I look forward to the founding conference of your party, where we will work collectively towards our shared socialist vision. We are building a new kind of party – one rooted in a mass movement and democratically accountable.”
The conference took place at a time when the membership of some members of your party was canceled due to their membership of other parties like the Socialist Workers.
Despite this ban, Sultana has the support of the Socialist Unity Platform, a lobby organization that includes groups including the Communist Party of Great Britain.
