JCPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood has created a list of schools to be closed, consolidated and relocated in the district.
Jefferson County Public Schools is proposing a plan to advance all school start times by 20 minutes, JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan confirmed in a statement to The Courier Journal on Nov. 21.
According to Callahan, Superintendent Brian Yearwood will add a recommendation to adjust the start time for the 2026-27 school year to the agenda of the Dec. 9 meeting with the Jefferson County Board of Education. He said it’s a “major topic” that Yearwood has heard about from principals and staff.
Right now, JCPS has three different start times: 7:30, 8:40 and 9:40 a.m. Under the proposal, the start times would be adjusted to 7:10, 8:20 and 9:20 a.m.
The proposed change comes a day after JCPS announced plans to close, consolidate and relocate several schools before the next school year in an effort to achieve more than $100 million in needed cuts. That proposal is also expected to go before the school board on Dec. 9.
