So when a feud with an old friend (Crudup) throws him into an identity crisis, Jay happily takes his entire crew on an impromptu trip across Europe, starting in Paris and ending at an Italian film festival, where he’ll be honored for a lifetime achievement.
Along the way, he’ll encounter astonished fans, travel on transit with no first class, and be forced to look back on his life, whether he likes it or not.

George Clooney is absolutely excellent as Jay Kelly.
The film begins with a death scene by Jai which naturally includes a mournful monologue, a fatal gunshot wound, and a cute dog actor. Immediately, Mortimer and Baumbach make us realize Jay’s talents onscreen and offscreen. As the camera cuts away, he immediately claps his hands and encourages different crew members by name, and as he looks at them they all light up. He is that kind of star.

However, far from ideal, these characters display complexity in scenes beyond their interactions with Jai.
As the trip to Europe goes off the rails, Jay’s crew drops one member after another as they make choices that aren’t for them – a big client, a sick dog, a baby back home, and so on. A party seems to be coming to an end, and there is a question as to who will be the last one standing.

Dern trembles with frustration at every bump in the road, while Sandler is her foil, always cheerful, perhaps even delusionally optimistic. They are a comedic duo who connect with each other with a strong emotional understanding.
